a) TOP CON appears to be a reward (of some kind) for participants who contribute (ask and/or answer) in an individual category (up to three categories can be awarded).
How?
If it is your aim or desire to be a top con, concentrate all your answer time in just one or two categories. Choose the ones that hold your interest and you excel in.
b) Yes, it did appear automatically, one day I logged on and there it was: the insidious TOP CON label.
c) Fair, probably not. Especially for those people whom have been on here a long time (many Level 7's) but answer all over the site.
It is only fair to those who stay in the same categories.
d) Again with the chicken and the egg! Ha Ha.
I have no idea!

You could have saved yourself 5 points if you would have typed this question (these questions) in the Yahoo!Answers search box. They have been asked hundreds of time and received many 100's of answers.
Or you could have gone to the YA blog (see that little blue word up in the right hand corner of the screen) and it is all explained there, better than I can.
There is also a new Yahoo group for TC's as well. Fair? Of course it is, everyone has the same chance of getting it, so it is very fair. Think of it as a grade just like you get (earn?) in school. Good answers (and questions) will get a higher grade.
Oh, and the chicken or egg thing. Guess what! The answer I just put for the other three questions is the very same answer. How about that for a coincidence.

It's a new thing they added on the site. People don't automatically get it - they have to answer a great number of questions in a particular category.
Is it fair? Well, it doesn't make that much sense because it fails, once more, to address answer quality. Then again, I wouldn't take the points systems too seriously anyway.
The egg came before the chickens - dinosaurs used to lay them in a tie before there were chickens.

The Top Contributor is based on the fact that you are knowledgeable and in one particular category for a long period of time or even in certain categories quite often. But you have to be recognized by Yahoo in any specific categories. You'll get it eventually.

It is a reward for staying the course. It helps the answers from all being jokes.
Fair? Do you want the title without working for it? OK you are it?
