it doesnt recognize the file format. i downloaded quicktime, but it still doesnt work? any ideas?

mp4s are a quicktime audio, usually. sometimes they are movies. to avoid the confusion, apple encourages users to use the m4a format (which means just rename the file) ( http://m4a.com/ ).
first try opening quicktime and then opening the file from within quicktime, if that works then you may need to associate mp4s with quicktime:
open quicktime player
go to edit>preferences>quicktime preferences>filetypes tab
click the dash in front of "MPEG - MPEG system.."
check the box for "MPEG-4 media"

Get an ipod. Jking. maybe it doesn't have the driver that reads the mp4. If its samsung, mobiblu, sansa, sony, then you need a cd, or download a driver.
