I use one. It usually pops open if you have put too much or too little Downy in it. Also could be that it's been used to death. I do lots of laundry and had to replace mine after about one year. Perhaps a new one will do the trick if the over filling or under filling isn't the problem. Best of luck to you.

Oh dear. This sounds like a personal problem!
Just kidding, it is because the rubber seal is either too small or worn out. You will need to purchase a new one. I have this excellent device that sits over the agitator and I pour the fabric softener in before starting a load of laundry. It automatically dispences the detergent when it is needed.

I can think of two reasons off the bat.

Maybe the seal is getting a little worn out, in which case you would get a new ball...they are about 2 dollars.

Maybe your washer is agitating too hard and knocks it loose, in which case you would set it on a more delicate wash cycle.
