I think one of the major causes of racism is the herd mentality. Lets say you have friends in the KKK and perhaps you want to belong like the cowardly sheep that you are. An overall lack of understanding that at the end of the day we are all the same under the skin. And finally just being simple minded and unable to see things objectively.

Racism is caused by people who just refuse to except that skin is just that, skin. It protects us from the sun, germs and foreign bacteria. It has nothing to do with what on the inside (unless people are silly enough to project stereotypes). In science, we learn that there is no such thing as "race" we are all homosapian. In religion, we learn that we were all created in the image of one God. People cant except either one of these.
Also, people act as if they can't recognize that there are good and bad people of all ethnicities. Yeah, some blacks commit crimes, but us white people have done some damn dirty s/h/i/t too throughout time. Same with other races. I think we should concern ourselves with how to end it rather than what causes it, thats a done deal.

Visible differences in behavior -- in other words, some of the stereotypes are (more or less) true. Racism will end when ethnic groups fail to distinguish themselves by behavior.
Fill in the blanks:
White collar crime is committed by __
The best students in math class in school are __
Prisoners are disproportionately __
Illegal aliens are overwhelmingly __
When you can't think of a clear answer to those questions, racism will be over!

In my opinion, the way a large number of the people in that race act and other race's inability to understand that other culture or cope with it. Also isolation, segregating our cultures to keep us from having to deal with others. Also perhaps feelings of superiority.

I think the media has a lot to do with it. Perpetuating stereotypes, instilling fear, etc.
