I've always felt that discretion is a positive trait, but my ex said it's a sign of selfishness!

Is he from the planet Uranus? Makes no sense to think being discreet about things is a bad thing. If more people were discreet perhaps we wouldn't have open display of nonsense and foolishness.

I can see his point b/c discretion borders on lying, as in with holding the truth supposedly for the sake of sparing another when in reality you are sparing yourself which equals selfishness.
Now to be discreet can be a good thing depending on your motive. If it truly is to protect someone & you have nothing to gain then yes it's good.
If you know that your friend's boyfriend is cheating, are you being discreet to protect her or yourself? Now that's the question.

Disagree, It means not broadcasting to the world and everyone in the path what you are doing .
To be discrete means to be careful in what you do , where you
do it and who knows about it and who you tell about it.
If you brag , you are being the opposite. If you tell everyone
your business , then you are not discrete.

I disagree. A certain amount of discretion is always a good thing.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I see your husbands point....being discreet means that you do not want to apply self restraint, but don't want others to know. I guess that would be a form of selfishness.

You ex (and consider the source, OK) is completely wrong.

For me, discretion is a brand of sacrifice, where you will NOT do for the bebefit of another. If you ex has this caliber of attitude, i see why he is the ex
