Ok, so my baby can sleep overnight in it until about 6 months?

Thanks for all responses!

I'm debating between getting a bassinet or just getting a pack and play with a bassinet in it. I want the baby to sleep beside my bed for the first few months, but not in my bed, and our room is not big enough for a crib. A lot of people use bassinets for the first few months before moving up to a crib. They are also alot more portable and can fit better say...in your living room or something. So you can have somewhere to put the baby when you want it in the same room as you while it sleeps.

Well a bassinet is used primarly so you don't have to worry about getting up and going into the other room to feed the baby. "Transitioning to the crib by 6 months is usually easier — for both parents and baby — before the habit is ingrained and other developmental issues (such as separation anxiety) come into play. Eventually, though, the routine will likely be broken at some point, either naturally because the child wants to or by the parents' choice.

But there are ways that you can still keep your little one close by, just not in your bed. You could:

Put a bassinet, play yard, or crib next to your bed. This can help you maintain that desired closeness, which can be especially important if you're breastfeeding. The AAP says that having an infant sleep in a separate crib, bassinet, or play yard in the same room as the mother reduces the risk of SIDS. "

a bassinet is used as a temporary bed for the infant. Most people put the baby in their room for the first several months and the baby sleeps in the bassinet until the baby is old enough or the parents decide to put the baby in it's own room then it sleeps in it's crib. The bassinet is also portable so if you had to stay overnight somewhere it is easier to move than a crib, but I then I would just use a pack and play.

The bassinet is a great sleeping area for an infant. The size is much smaller than a crib and gives that cocoon comfort for an infant. Because of the bassinet's size and because many have wheels, you can move the bassinet close to the parents' bed while the family is sleeping. This location is comforting and easier access for the parent.

Probably not that long. My babies were rolling over by 3 months and sitting up by 4 months. Once they are moving around like that the bassinet is not safe. They could easily climb out. I think bassinets are pretty useless since you can't use them for long. They are just pretty. Most "pack 'n' plays" come with a bassinet insert and are still useful especially for travelling after the baby gets bigger.

its for a new born to sleep in. Babies wake up so much in the middle of the night its easier to have a bassenit in your room then to have to walk into the babys room and get them, not to mention alot of first time moms (or even second and third timers) just like to have the baby in their room for the first few months to make sure the baby is ok during the night, i know with my daughter i woke several times during the nihgt and just reached in the bassinet and made sure she was breathing still. you will know the feeling once you have your first if you havent yet

A bassinet allows you to keep the baby close and be aware of it preferably in the room with you.
I also prevents the child from feeling wide open because it is cosier and close.
It is cheaper than a crib and allows young mothers to save for a crib in the future.

my sister used it to keep baby in the room with her. eventually the baby slept with her in the bed and the bassinet became a "catch all" including laundry and toys.
