He began the painting in 1508 and finished in 1912. He hated the task, imposed by Pope Giulio II.
Sculpting was his life. Using his impressive authority as Pope, Giulio II forced Michelangelo to paint the roof of the Sistine Chapel.
Michelangelo also sculped GiulioII funereal monument, and sculpted the Pope, as a kind of vengeance, with an eye closed and the other open, meaning that the Pope never slept...

It took him over four years. From July of 1508 to October of 1512.
