I believe that by treating others respectfully I will be given respect in return. That would answer the question. By giving I receive.

Depends on the situation. Parent should be given respect, for the simple fact that they are their parents. Kids should be given repect because they are young and need to know what it is like to be respected so they in turn can give it to others.
People can loose respect for others then it needs to be earned back.

I suppose that respect is not earned but it is given by the merit of a man; The man who is exemplary and forthright, he can be used as a model for those who need inspiration. I personally misused the word it seems for many years. I would say to give all men their due, give them honor for being alive and living under the grace of God.

People should give respect! Everyone should anyways. In that way you are earning respect too!m In the world today it shouldn't matter if you like the person or not. If you are even a descent person you would give respect to make yourself happier and healthier! I do it a lot!
I hope it helped out some.

Civility and morality should be given and then respect can be earned. it seems to me people confuse the first two for respect and thats when all the problems start.

There are some people who, I believe, you automatically give your respect too, e.g. your teacher, your boss because they are in position of authority and their are some people even those who are listed above who have to earn it.
I don't think it's clear cut.
