Doing a split isn't really something that you can learn to do. It has to do with flexibility, which is something you have to work on over a period of time. There are exercises you can do specifically to stretch your splits though. You can do lunge exercises, and then hold the splits as far as you can without hurting yourself, and stretch forward and back. If you want to stretch your center splits, you can do a stretch in second, and stretch right, left and center. After that, you can go to a wall, lay flat on your back with your legs up against the wall. Make sure you are pushed all the way against the wall, and open your legs into a second stretch. Gravity will naturally pull your legs down. This stretch is not comfortable, but it will stretch you well. In order for it to be effective, you have to hold the stretch for about 10 minutes. If you want, you can do crunches while holding this position. When you are done with this stretch, slowly bring your legs together until they are vertical against the wall.

Well I do agree with the others on this one but from my experience I do the splits best by stretching everyday. A few exercises I did to get my splits all the way down was doing them (or try doing them) on my stairs, or if you don't have stairs take a balance beam and put one leg up on it and do them, and if you don't have one or cant do them on a balance beam, take one or two phone books and put one leg on top of them and do the splits. This stretches your hamstrings and butt muscles so you can get all the way down with no restraints.

Try these exercises and let me know how it goes!!!
Keep on dancin'!!!!

It's not exactly how you do a split but what you do to get a split. It takes a lot of flexibility of the hip joints and patience (and lots of it).

all it takes is hard work and determination
if you hold the splits position as long as you can they will eventually just come
the secret to getting them is holding the splits not just trying it for one second and giving up
good luck!
try listening to some good music while doing this that always gets me pumped

Very carefully and only after you are warmed up and limber enough to do it. Torn hamstrings are no joke. You'll feel that one literally for years.
