Do what your coach tells you but be careful with that.

If all you do are kicking exercises then you're putting your entire workout on your legs. You'll be more likely to suffer a leg injury when you do that.

I had a rotator cuff problem in the left shoulder at the start of this year and couldn't swim without pain. I got some physio... did some back muscle exercises that the physio demonstrated as well as various stretches - over two months I can now swim comfortably in squad - not doing full sprints yet.. but that will come.

If you are not busy doing this kind of recovery for your shoulder, (must be under the supervision of a trained professional) you could try and ride an exercise bike or use an orbital stepper or a treadmill for walking.

You should see a doctor, someone who specialises in that kind of stuff. I just went to a doctor yesterday and because I kept swimming (very low intensity though and less volume than before) it got messed up really badly. Turns out my tendons got sort of interwined or something, the ones that handle the rotary cuff muscle which is used a lot during swimming. So you should go soon 'cause now my neglecting of it and thinking it will go away made it worse.
If you don't want to go to a doctor then take something anti-inflammation and put anti-inflammation creams on your shoulder and ice it.
But it'll be best to go to a doctor. He may require you to come several times for sort of massage and sonic heating sessions.
Keep in mind you might have to relax a bit from swimming to get better faster...better than wasting as long as ten months trying to get over it and only doing kicks.

Hey, sorry to hear about your injury! Have you tried biking? You could ride, just be careful and don't take on anything too taxing/jolting to the arms (ie stick to road and not mountain). When I hurt my shoulder I was OUT of swimming, period. It sucked but I did find that biking outside was a great alternative because I got to cruise around and be outside and while it's not exactly as awesome as being in the water it does tend to break up the monotony a bit.

Good luck and keep up the rehab!!!

Really the only thing you can do which wouldn't hurt you in the long run (working out one arm could cause lots of problems) would be to do just what you are doing now, kick a lot, and do dryland. You can try cycling if you want, or do a variety of dryland workouts for your legs.
