I've done several science fairs. From my experience, each category usually has a winner. The fewer people that enter a category, the greater your chance is of winning. So, if your goal is to win 1st place, as you've seemingly indicated above, you should choose the one that less students enter each year. Now. . this won't help you went you get to a regional competition, as it will now be about quality of a project. I would pick the one you are most interested in and feel the most passion towards. I would consider several ideas on paper for each and make a T chart. list the positive ideas for both categories and then consider which one you would prefer. I would think Robotics would be more difficult to experiment with, as you'd have to have more expensive equipment and experience (or an experienced adult to help). More people are interested in the enviromental sciences (especial more females) and you could look at a local issue to possibly receive additional awards for your original and groundbreaking research. Global Warming is a big topic right now. I've included my favorite news clip below on this since I love Bill Nye. Make sure your project is specific and interesting to the general public if you are in middle school. If you are in high school it can be more specific and should indicate a lot of original data with numbers rather than just obervations.

NASA has a lot of free materials on Robotics. Their recent shuttle launches have included a lot or robotics work. Do you live in Texas or FL?

I've found that often the presentation is half of the project. Video feeds, cool things (like robots), lots of colorful graphs, hands on stuff for people to see, etc. . . draws a lot of attention to your project.

Good luck!!!

I would choose Environmental sciences instead of robotics any day. You could win 1st place with the proper research. Global Warming and Air Pollution are very important. They might even be more important than robotics. People do robotics because they get lazy to do things their selves. If it stops the world just wouldn't be modern. If global warming, air pollution, etc. does not stop we could all be dead.
