The final episode original "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" shows Hawkeye in Ward D which is an "insane asylum" basically and then goes into flashbacks leading into his placement in Ward D. There has been some confusion about this episode because it was orginially aired as a 2 hour plus movie and was then cut down in syndication to 22 minute shows. So either way if you're talking about the original airing of 2 plus hours or the syndication release of 22 minute segments you start with Hawkeye in Ward D("insane asylum") and then go into flashbacks. He was only in the asylum on the finale. He went there when he made a Korean woman strangle her child to death to keep him quiet, only Hawkeye thought it was a chicken.

It was only in the finale....he lost it when he saw a mother kill her baby to keep it quiet so they all wouldn't die.
