Nothing short of spending a BIG pile of cash for major modifications to the fuel injection, timing, exhaust and computer system. Even after all that you are only looking at about a twenty HP gain. Horsrpower TV recently did a build-up on a Honda Civic. They dyno tested the car before they installed a cold air tube, complete exhaust system and headers to the tune of $1,000.00. Net HP gain -- ten.
Whoopee. For that kind of cash and the cost of the car itself you can buy a damn Mustang V8 with three times the HP in stock form.

The easiest things to do, would be to get a chip, Cold air intake, Underdrive pulleys, Headers, Flow through cat, High out put exhaust, better spark plugs, lighter wheels and tires. Lighter body panels will help the car seem quicker. Also see if a shift kit is made for your car, this will improve the response time of your transmission. Other than that then you need to look at real expensive options, like cams, cranks, pistons, motor swap.

Of course if you want a high performance car, you could sell the Civic and then buy a S2000 or NSX.

Being an auto you will only get so much improvement. You could try headers, a Flowmaster muffler, and a K&N air filter. Those 3 things will likely yield 20 more HP, on a car the size of a Civic it would be a noticeable improvement.
