I have to admit, I dont know much about hermit crabs so I looked it up on the Internet. Here are some excellent sites (the first one literally discusses the causes for a hermit crab leaving its shell and how to handle it)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermit_crab

exoticpets.about.com/od/hermitcrabs/Hermit_Crabs.htm (has excellent link)

I think this will help you with you hermit crab dilemma; rest assured, from what I've read, HE'S NOT DEAD!

Smell it, if it smells like rotting fish it's dead. If it smells like iodine it's molting in which case you need to isolate it from your other crabs make sure your temp is stable at 75-80F and you have good humidity of 75%-80% and you keep the area dark and quiet for the crab or you will stress it out. Also offer it ocean salt water, dechlor fresh water, cuttlebone, honey, and spirulina.

He might go to find something to get in like a new shell or he is dead. If he is not try to give a new shell quick!
