First, think locally. What changes might benefit your campus or your community? When I give a similar assignment for the technical writing classes that I teach, students frequently write about improving the parking situation on campus, changing various campus policies (admission requirements, alcohol policy, etc.) or making/changing city laws or ordinances (prohibiting smoking in eating establishments, etc.).

Whatever you do, you should probably avoid big issues. For instance, you probably should stay away from issues such as gun control laws, the war in Iraq, or overturning Roe V. Wade. Such issues are typically emotionally charged and way too big to be discussed (and solved) in the course of a 5-10 page paper.

Well look around your school. What policy do they have that you think is silly? Why do you think it's silly.

Can you leave campus for lunch? Can you buy fast food at lunch? Can you use your cell phone? Can you listen to your IPod??? Can you wear spaghetti strap sun dresses? Can you wear a baseball hat? Can you wear it backwards?

Pick something that affects you personally.

Now think of reasons why the rule should abolished. If you make this personal, it will be much easier, and who knows, you might even get the rule changed at your school.

Good luck!

Well, perhaps it could be on spelling. I cannot fathom how you got to be a college freshman and are improperly using the word "purposing" rather than "proposing". For shame...
