Thats a difficult question. All you have to do is watch the try-outs on American Idol to know that many people are mislead into believing that they sound good.
However, this shouldn't deter you. If you are too shy to sing alone in public, think about joining the school choir. You'll sing in a big group of people, and your conductor/teacher will give you feedback about your voice.

Whether you are an actor or a singer, when you get on the stage, you die and you become a different person or character or singer when you feel the song in your soul.

if ya can sing a song without falter or fail, and are able to hold a note right, you will know you've nothing to fright!
