Sorry to hear about that, there's a few reasons why the mother ate the babies. At this point you can't do anything for the babies, but in the future you might want to keep these in mind:
-The babies were ill/malformed.
-The mother needed more protein. Next time she gets pregnant, try giving her some cooked egg whites every now and again. Also make sure to give her fresh fruits, she needs a lot of extra nutrition to support the babies, and if she can't, she'll kill them.
-The mother was disturbed too often. When she has babies, you should leave her alone as much as possible, don't keep gawking every few minutes, she'll feel threatened. Some hamsters are more sensitive than others.
-If it was her first litter, she just might not have known what to do/not felt secure enough.
Do NOT separate the babies from the mother! They need her milk and warmth and are completely helpless without her. Hope that helped you.

Well, she either felt that there was not enough food and water for all of them and they may suffer, or they were sick and were not going to make it. Or she did not want to be a mom, is this her first litter? If they think the litter will suffer they will do what is called a mercy killing to prevent this, sometimes it takes up to 3 litters before they actually not eat them and care for them. You have to remove the male but you do not remove the mother for at least 3 weeks. And touching the babies, mother, or cleaning the cage, or making a lot of noise will cause the mother to eat them again. So be careful, and there was nothing you could have done.

That usually doesn't happen, You know your not supposed to pick them up until they're 2 weeks old Right? Because if you do, the mother will eat them, so will the father if you don't separate them.
I don't think there is any thing that you can do about your baby hamsters

Handling hamster babies too soon will cause the mother to reject them, as you had "contaminated" them with the scent from your hand.
Let the babies be for at least a week.

There's nothing you CAN do for this time - consider it a lesson learned. They do that.
