It burns big scratch marks into the disks with it's laser. I have not removed the warranty void sticker. Would it be better for me to just open it up and try to recalibrating the laser? Then if I fail buy a new one?

the laser repair alone will cost more than a new ps2 so just get another one. if you get 1 from walmart you can get the product protection plan that will cover problems like that in the future also go to the sony site and see what they can do. it might be an unusual problem and they may work out something just to see how it happened. can't lose by trying. hope that helps.
