Kudos to you for designing your own dress! The best advice I would give you is to buy a color that complements your skin tone (are you warm or cool)? If you are warm, a simple, elegant cream color would be beautiful. Then you can jazz it up with accessories (colorful hair bands or ribbons). The fabric should be simple and elegant also. A nice silk would be beautiful. Or eyelet is big this season if you want it more casual.

A graduation is more formal so a navy blue is not only casually formal but thought of as a scholarly color. Cotton is the easiest to sew with it won't stretch as with other fabrics. Cotton is also very inexpensive.
