We just switched from Cox high speed internet to AT&T DSL. I tried hooking up the router to get wireless on my laptop but it didn't work. Do I need to do something specific or will LINKSYS not work with DSL?

Yes, it should work.

Read the manual that came with your router.

If you don't have the manual any longer, then download it from the linksys web site.

RTFM

I've been struggling with this same issue. I've found the advice at
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/12670

and

http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/sbc/3.1_Speedstream_5100

helpful. The setup described in the first proposal seemed to be working for a while, but it's currently acting flaky in that I cannot robustly access the modem GUI and I don't understand why. This is the setup described as "double nat" in the second part of the FAQ. I haven't tried the "PPOE on router" option yet, I would like to be able to access the modem statistics for instance.

I do think that ATT should provide more support than they do but the FAQ's help a lot. There are also some people on dsl / broadband reports who are very helpful, check the message boards there.

Since I have a WRT54GL, I've been thinking of upgrading to one of the third party firmwares, see for instance

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G#Third-party_firmware_projects

but I'm not quite ready to take that step yet.

Well there is a slight difference in the connection type that you may need to change in the router.

First be sure you setup your AT&T modem using the well overloaded software they send you.

Then you need to change your routers setting just slightly.
AT&T uses PPTP which means a username and password has to get sent to reconnect if the modem drops your connection.

Log in to your linksys router and on the setup page change it from DHCP (in the box at the top) to PPTP and put your AT&T username and passwords in the boxes that will appear!

You should be set to roll.

I have AT&T / SBC DSL and they gave me a Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem and here is how it is set up.
I have a D-Link router, but it should be the same.

First the off the DSL modem will connect to the AT&T with PPP, and as such requires that you log into it at http://192.168.0.1 (Your modem) and set the user name and password and tell it to connect. It will in turn create a DHCP server using 192.168.1.X for your router to connect to. So your router has to be setup to use a DHCP connection to connect to the modem and will be given 192.168.1.1.

It should work, I use it here. Try unplugging your modem and router, then plug in the modem first, then the router.
