Our small town of 15,000 people had a fantastic donut shop years ago but the folks who owned it retired and did not pass the business down. My wife and I have decided to open a donut shop (using the same name, if possible) but there's a slight problem. We know absolutely nothing about donuts! We know how to run a business but not a donut business.

Are there any books and/or reading material we could reference regarding donut machines, recipes, etc...? We really don't want to franchise if at all possible.

Do you think we should try to hire a consultant to get things under way, as far as equipment, operations, etc...?

Thanks for any advice!

You may want to consider hiring someone who does know the ins & outs of the doughnut business,.. a consultant,.. not necesarily full time.

You need to figure out how to make something that is as appealing as a donut that is a healthy food. Many people realize that they can't eat fatty donuts anymore. Start with whole grain products and develop a tasty product. Bagels are much more acceptable. You'll have to be able to advertise 150 calories or less per serving.

I use to run online store and i have closed it and have started a better profit making business now. We use to sell these DVDs that teach you how to do dohuts and also train you equipments. I remember it was priced at $150. I am sure that will be a useful one for you. If ur interested, i can trace back the supplier who did supply to us then and order one for you.
