Life on this planet is defined as "carbon-based", because it is the one element that is the basis for our existance. All complex molecules that make up all life on this planet have carbon in them. Scientists and science fiction writers sometimes postulate about silicon-based life, but we've never found any organic material, living or dead, that wasn't based on carbon)

Elemental carbon (not combined with any other elements) can come in a variety of forms: diamond, graphite, and coal are three common examples. None of these substances is toxic. In fact, if you swallow poison you might just be given a charcoal milk shake to absorb it.

CO POISONING SYMPTOMS - Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms
Carbon monoxide characteristics
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that, physiologically, is a chemical asphyxiant. When inhaled, it combines with hemoglobin more readily than does oxygen, displacing oxygen from hemoglobin and thereby interfering with oxygen transport by the blood. In other words, breathing carbon monoxide can lead to asphyxiation - unconsciousness and even death.

A person suffering from carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication may have these symptoms:
first experience euphoria (similar to the effect of a martini or two)
then headache
and possibly vomiting
as the concentration of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood increases.

Other symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning include:
Weakness
dizziness
Lethargy
Confusion
