It is if a forward player is clearly "behind" an assumed line of two or more "last" defense players of the OPPOSITE team in direction toward their goal at the kickoff moment of a pass given by one of his team mates in order to attack.
The rule says that the forward(or any other field player) MUST be BEHIND that assumed line to be an offside. An ALIGNMENT of those players at kickoff is NOT offside.
If a field player breaks through the opposite defense line while he had already possession of the ball isn't offside either, even though it may convincingly look like one.

offsides in soccer is when a ball is passed/played to an attacking player with less than two defending players (goalie usually but not necessarily and another defender) between the attacking player getting the ball and the goal line

it keeps attacking players from just waiting up front

in american football, offsides is when a player is on the wrong side of the line of possession when play is started.

if the last defender (not including the goalie) is in between the attacking player and the ball when the ball is kicked, then that attacking player is offside

A player cannot gain an advantage by waiting for the ball near the opposing goal with only the goalkeeper between him and the goal (only in the usual situation that the goalkeeper is the last defender).

If any part of your body is ahead of the other team's defense, not including the goalie, BEFORE the ball is played, you are offside.

In really simple terms, an attacker, when in the attacking half of the field, has to either have the ball in front of him, or else two defensive players in front of him (one of which is generally the goalkeeper). This rule is to prevent cherry picking in front of the goal.

if you are past the last defender WITHOUT the ball, you are offsides. here is a good movie that explains it.
