Macbeth is a tragic hero because he has the qualities of a tragic hero. A tragic hero experiences instigation from outside forces which lead to his downfall. The prophecy of the three sinister witches and Lady Macbeth's speech awakened Macbeth's ambition and led him to kill the King Duncan.

By definition a tragic hero is a character who, in spite of a basic goodness and superiority, has a tragic flaw, and because of this fault is destined to fail. The flaw may be greed, poor judgment, pride, a weakness for something (such as for love, drink, or power), or in Macbeth's case, ambition.
At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is the greatest and most trusted of Duncan's generals - a 'peerless kinsman'. He is respected by the other thanes, and is held high enough in the king's esteem to be awarded the title and lands of the executed Cawdor. By the end of the play, he is referred to as 'the dead butcher', having lost all - respect, titles, crown and life.

He is depicted as tragic when we see him degenerate from being a noble man to a violent individual.
He is influenced and corrupted by the witches' prophesy which makes him think about being King of Scotland, Lady Macbeth suggests a plan to murder the king and his ambition makes him act. From being a war hero and loyal to his king he changes and brings about his own tragic end by his greed.

In order to be a tragedy, you must have lost something. Macbeth at the beginning of the play was seen as honorable, and given a new place of power (thane of cawdor). He eventually makes himself king, through murder, lies, and manipulation. The tragedy is that in his quest for power, he lost his identity, his name, and his friends
