you can get a refund in california for cans that you return or bring to recycling shops i think coz that's what my father in-law does , he saves those cans/bottles and brings them to the recycling shop and gets a little cash back .

I haven't refunded bottles in so long that I have no idea how much it would be; back in the 60s and 70s it was a few cents. It's to encourage people to recycle the bottles, rather than throwing them away. Back "in the day," bottles were a lot more costly to make, and companies collected the empties, sterilized and re-used them at bottling plants. Now, of course, most places just re-cycle the aluminum and plastic containers.
