Internships are semester-long work assignments for a company in your field.

Co-ops are similar to internships, but they consist of 3 or more semesters working for the same company. These assignments are spread out throughout your time at school. They generally give you better work experience, since you are committed to a company for a longer period of time, so your work will be more meaningful.

Internships often happen during the summer. Co-ops will usually occur during normal school semesters (fall and spring), so instead of taking classes you would be working instead.

Many internships do not carry academic credit. Some co-ops carry a bit of academic credit, but don't replace your core requirements. Some co-ops don't carry any academic credit at all.

It usually doesn't change the type of diploma you will receive. Some programs will put a distinction on your diploma to indicate that you were in the co-op program. This is similar to any academic honors that you would receive on your diploma.

These programs will often extend the amount of time you will be in school. However, they will give you great work experience that will make you a much more competitive applicant when you graduate and are looking for full-time employment.

I graduated from a non-co-op university back in the mid 90's. But when I started working, some of my co-workers had gone to schools where their curriculum required co-ops.

So for me, I did an internship the summer before my senior year. It usually occurs for the summer before you graduate, though we get interns at the company I work at now during summers after all years in college. Internships are totally optional - you could sit on your rear all summer long and it doesn't affect your education.

Co-ops are usually worked into the curriculum. The curriculum will usually last 5-6 years and there are certain semesters where you already know upfront you will need to work at a company in your major.

I know many people who may turn their noses up at an automatic 5-6 years in college, but let me tell you, one of the things that companies look at first (besides your GPA) is if you have any experience or not. Both co-ops and internships are sooo important.
