Before Christianity took hold, people had feasts and festivals during equinoxes and solstices, etc., in honor of their God/s. Christianity came along, claimed that their Jesus was reborn at about the same time of year that many cultures had their fertility rituals, and assimilated things like eggs and bunnies for easter, trees, yule logs, and all kinds of stuff for christmas, etc., etc.

Rabbits and birds grow "twitterpated" and reproduce a lot in the Spring. Easter is in the Spring. This is one connection.
Also, there is a symbolic connection between the opening of an egg or womb to release a living creature, and the opening of Jesus' tomb to release the living Christ.
Also, there is an Eastern Christian legend that Mary Magdalene, who was of high birth, was dining with the Roman emperor and telling him the miraculous life of Jesus. To prove the miraculous power of God, she picked up an egg from the table and it miraculously turned red. This is why Eastern Christians dye Easter eggs red; in the West we have mostly forgotten this story, but we enjoy dying eggs anyway.

I have no idea why rabbits & eggs (especially chocolate ones) have anything to do with Easter.

I do know that rabbits do not lay eggs.

Both are a sign of fertility during the Vernal equinox (spring). It has been an old tradition in Europe that was combined with Easter because of the time of the year Easter is celebrated.
