I've always wanted to know the difference and it's boggling my mind right now!

Good question... I thought the auto manufactures coined different names as a marketing ploy to make their product seem more exotic.
From a technical standpoint a sunroof is removeable whereas a moonroof is not...

They are one in the same. Today's auto manufactures call them a sunroof. In the beginning days the roof side panels covering the front passengers could be completely removed. The pre - 90's Chevrolet Monte Carlos were a perfect example.
