I name my torts after things like:

- Identifying characteristics. One of my Redfoots has a letter 'M' on its shell, so I looked for an M name in my Lord of the Rings dictionary and came up with Mylo (actually Milo, but I changed the i. It is one of the Hobbits in the Shire.) My Ornate Box turtle was Starburst, from the shell pattern.

- Names they are called locally. One of my Redfoots is Japuta, the common name used by the native tribes.

- Famous places near where they come from. My African Hingebacks were named for wildlife refuges there- Etosha and Tsavo.

- Books, like Lord of the Rings (Mylo, Radagast the Brown, Goldberry, etc.), etc. There are some good kids stories with turtles if you want. I've also used cartoons- Natasha was a Russian tortoise named for a character from the old Bullwinkle cartoons.

- Some variation of the common or scientific name. Woody was a Wood turtle, a Russian tortoise (Testudo horsefeldi) named Pasture (a horse field is a pasture. bad pun!)

I actually have a Sulcata Tortoise named Moe. We named him that because of the fact my young infants observed him eating, and suggested "Wow! He particular can mow with the aid of some nutrients!" So, in line with possibility like somebody else suggested, wait to call your tortie until you get a feeling for what style of character he/she has!

I don't know I have a Russian tortoise named Nina, we were considering Rina, but then we settled on Nina. What about Shelly? on second thought maybe that's too typical, maybe something rare like Catalina...

We called our turtle Fred.. He didn't come when we called him, or act much like he cared one way or another, but we liked the name :)
