Trench warfare became a common military tool with the advent of effective fire arms. Bowmen had to stand in order to effectively loose their arrows.
Trenches were used as far back as Roman times to lay siege to fortifications, and defend fortifications. Roman doctrines called for improving defense position daily when a legion was stationary. Normally a palisade would be constructed then a trench dug outside the palisade.
In the middle ages trenches became the best way to lay siege and approach closely to the Castle. Men who were good at this were refereed to as Sapper & Engineers and often when capture would be put to death. The Truks dug a huge trench around Venenia.
Trenches became very popular with the advent of rifle muskets. In the trench the rifle men were somewhat protected and could stand and fire.
The American Civil War was the first large scale use of trenches and where trench warfare became a practice tatic rather than the occasional tatic. The last two years of the war were mostly a series of trench warfare battles.
WW1 was the largest scale of trench warefare ever scene.
Trenches are used today, the Army refer to them as fighting positions but they are smaller trenches. Normal practice is that when ever you stop for more than a few hours you dig in. I have dug a number of fighting positions, we even dig in our armored vehicles.

The most famous (infamous) use of trenches in war was WWI and after that they were never used again. There may have been a few small cases of trench warfare shortly before WWI, but it wasn't used much.

WW1 trenches 1st had barbed cord alongthe suitable of frontline because of the fact whilst the enemies have been attempting to take ove a trench this made it extremely demanding paintings for thenemies to get with the aid of hence the dfense couldkill them and carry hembak extra undemanding. yet another tactic replaced into no longer in basic terms to construct trenches in as we communicate lines yet to construct trenches diagonally so enemes tryed to invade anpther area of the trenches there must be another protection from the factors aswell. the trenches had channels gong back so whilst the enemies finally did get in the font area of the ditch the protection had a quik escape course. for offensive strategies they dug trenches in the direction of the enemies trenches to attempt and hear what wa being mentioned so the protection ought to get waiting for an attack. there replaced right into a fashionable inventer in the time who replaced into advised to invent a gun he invented in fact what we call the browning this replaced into used all alongside th factors of trenches to hold of enemie surely and efficently. i'm hoping those notes help
