Morals are part of peer pressure in society. Society has what we might consider to be unwritten but well known boundaries. Those boundaries sometimes coincide with laws which are designed to protect people and the public health, safety and welfare.
However, morals are not law and as boundaries in society they tend to shift between cultures and generations.
For instance in the time of Solomon, it was perfectly fine to have hundreds of wives AND concubines but in today's society, having more than one wife, even in the absence of anti-bigamy laws, seems absurd to most.
On the other hand, many Middle Eastern, African and tribal cultures around the world don't seem to care if one or both sexes practice polygamy.
Some in society consider smoking, gambling, homosexuality, and other conduct immoral, even though under the right circumstances they are perfectly legal.
Morality does not fit easily into religious disciplines either. Different religions consider different things moral and immoral.
However, everything said so far taken for what it says, I would add that morality's main purpose in our society is to create a concensus. Sort of a roadmap of how we'd like society to be but also know it well never to to the extreme.

It depends upon whose need or purpose you are asking about.
Each of us would like others to restrain themselves from doing things that might cause us problems, or reduce our pleasures.
And each of us are asked by others to do the same. If we all buy into the deal, we all make out, cooperation is mutually beneficial. So in my opinion, morality is a smart strategy for getting along with other people. It is not a matter of selfishness or selflessness, but a deal that benefits everyone. The trick is of course finding agreement as to the specifics.

I am going to approach this in an off-the-wall way If we had no moral values we would sanction murder, It would be OK to go 120 miles an hour on any freeway & no one would ever get a ticket cause we have no moral values It would be OK to beat your wife & kids It would be Ok to kill peoples pets etc The Law is or should be based on moral values

A moral code is the most important part of any society.
Without morals there are no laws, only anarchy. Morals
and laws protect most of us from each other.
