It depends on what area of the education field you are interested in.
You can obtain the required degrees for elementary education in an average 4 year college program and taking state license exams.
Teaching at the college / university level is closer to 6 to 8 years, depending on the degree the college requires for the position. Example, a community college may require a Masters degree (traditional 4 year plus 2 years for Masters), while other colleges or universities may want a Doctorate degree.
More universities and colleges are offering programs for elementary/high school education that are for working adults that take only 2 years, versus the traditional 4 year college route. So, it depends on what is offered in your area, along with what position you are interested in, and state requirements.

It depends on where you live and what kind of teacher you want to become.
In California you can earn a teaching credential and a Bachelor's degree at the same time in what's called a "blended program" at many of the California State Unviersities. You can actually get your teaching credential in four years through this program.
However, in some states, it takes five or even six years.

I think it depends on the state. In California, after you get your degree, you begin a teaching credentialing program. That takes about a year. Somewhere in there, you have to do your student teaching.
