It's 5 seconds but the officials call the infraction at 4 seconds as the time includes the pass to a player inbounds. However, if the ball is in the air at 4 seconds, most officials will usually stop counting.

Its 5 seconds. The way officials determine this is not my 1mississippi 2miss.... Officials use one of their arms to count. I'll try to explain this but its easier if you just watch.

They start with a their elbow bent so that a fist is in front of their chest, then the arm is extended in a smooth, fluid motion until their hand is as far it goes. That is 1 second. The motion is then repeated 5 times for 5 seconds. If you pay attention to referees you'll see what I'm talking about.

And a timeout called be called at any point before the 5 seconds are up.

It's suppose to be 5 seconds, counting "one-mississipii, two-mississippi, three-mississippi...." and so on. But more often then not, officials either count it too slow or too fast.

You're probably getting the 3 second figure from where an offensive player gets 3 seconds in the lane.

You have 5 seconds. But it all depends on the ref. Some count way too fast!
