I really don't know, I usually just pass the thumbsdown, because everyone has their own opinion, so I don't think its right to thumbsdown anyone.

It serves to assist the question asker a Poll as to what everyone felt about another answer given. But sadly, awarding Best Answer to one answer does away with all the thumbs and plus you get three points back.
