I know there are similiar questions on this subject that have already been answered on here but i thought i'd just ask a question from my situation.
In my group at college most of the people are very loud and outspoken, i feel very uncomfortable around these people and i feel i cant say anything infront of them because i'll make myself look stupid. However,i have made a few good friends who are on the same level as me, who i can be myself infront of and we have a laugh together, then as soon as it goes back to being infront of the loud people, i go really quiet and hardly say anything, i try but i just cant. none of the loud people can understand why i'm quiet, they think i'm being rude or ignorant. it's so difficult for me and i'm now known as the girl who never speaks, which frustrates me because i know that i'm not that girl, not meaning to sound big-headed but i can make people laugh and i am a happy person but i just cant break out of the shell incase people dont like it!:(

Some one very close to me is the exact same way you are and it takes along time before she is comfortable with people so just let it be and keep trying at your own pace and eventually you will get there and dont worry about people not liking you because you are soo quiet, they just dont understand and they might even be a lil scared and wonder about you.....it can be to your advantage, have fun with it and remember you will make yourself heard when the time is right for you!! hope this helps you out!!

Lol.

Hey, I'm straight but in terms of being shy? I've been there.

How to handle it? Honestly? Accept you are a quiet person and that it takes time to get to know people. Get to know some other shy people, typically they have fewer freinds and less of a "image" front.

You can take up clubs like Toast Masters to improve your socila speaking ability

Have you considered alcohol? Just kidding. Ya know gal, you just have to find your groove and be FABULOUS. I'll have some suggestions for being FABULOUS on my blog soon....it's really a state of mind of being ultra flamboyant and OUT THERE (meanies would call me a flamer...there loss). OK so you dont have to go overboard, but so what if you say something stupid..no one will remember 5 minutes later.

You're lucky to have a few people that you can be yourself with. Just be happy with that and don't spend time with the loud people anymore.
