Others have given the right answer. I would just note that for over 150 years there have only been two duchesses in their own right. Queen Victoria created her aunt Duchess of Inverness in 1840 (as her marriage to his uncle was deemed invalid and she did not share his title), and later created the husband of her granddaughter, Princess Louise, Duke of Fife. They had no sons, so she re-created his title in 1900 with a clause in the patent allowing his daughters to inherit the title. After he died in 1912 his eldest daughter duly became Duchess of Fife, and died in 1959, to be succeeded by her nephew.
It would be nice if something similar were done for the present Duke of York, who only has two daughters - or if the future King William had a daughter and made her a duchess - but it would be surprising. Monarchy and aristocracy remain steeped in sexism.

There are different ways a woman can become a duchess:
1) Inheriting the dukedom (this one is not very easy, because most duchys are inherited in the male line only)
2) Marrying a duke (in which case she is not a duchess on her own but because of marriage)
3) By the reigning monarch giving her the title.
NB Camilla was NOT made a duchess by the Queen, she marely decided to use one of her husband titles (Duke of Cornwall) as the style she would use, but notice that according to a legal opinion in the UK she is by right Princess of Wales.
Also, if and when Charles becomes King it is HIS SON William who will become Duke of Cornwall.

Yes to the first answer - - - but add to that, the reigning monarch with approval of Parliment can 'raise' a woman to being a Duchess, such as the Duchess of Cornwall, one of Charles the 2nds mistressess was raised to the peerage and in time her son, the king's son, became the Duke of Cornwall upon her death... Sp yes, born or married or raised to the peerage.....
Peace......

They are either born into a family where they will inherit the title, or they marry a duke, or they can be given the title by the King or Queen.
