It's probably your telephone interface where your telephone line(s) comes into the house.

We could use a picture and or some dimensions. There are countless shades of gray and what is small to you may not be to me. If you want to give me some help, I might be able to figure it out. Some things that might help are:

Where do you live?
How old is the house?
Does the box have any wiring to it?
Does it have any piping to it?
Can you open it?
What is inside?
If you can't, is it sealed?
Is there a lock on it?
Is it plastic or metal?
Is there any writing on it?
How is it attached?
What is it attached to?
Any other details you might have.

Sometimes water meters are boxed and placed in odd locations. Cable TV sometimes has a box associated with it. The telephone junction wiring is usually contained within a box. Sometimes homes have outdoor electrical receptacles in boxes. This could be part of an automatic sprinkler system.

Since all your neighbors have one as well, it is probably something that was either installed when the home was built or installed by the city or county for some reason. Have you asked any of your neighbors, they might know, especially if one of them is a handy man or some type of construction worker.

Well now that's a lot of words that say nothing. You have to admit the question is a bit vague though and as I have tried to illustrate there are a number of possibilities.

Good luck on your quest and let me know through my profile if you post more details. I am a bit curious at this point and will gladly review any additional information you post.

USA If there are any wires from a utility pole or underground service box to the grey box, then it is probably telephone or cable TV service. If the box is very small - 2 inches by 2 inches - and there are no wires from a utility pole - it might be a remote readout for the water meter. You can verify that by locating your water meter, and if there is a wire attached to it, follow the wire. It will probably go to that box.

Does it have any wires running to it? It could possibly be a telephone or cable box if it does. That is the only thing I can think of that it could be unless the front open and you have an electrical outlet inside the box.

Cold be a ''knocks box'' used in some municipalities. It allows the Fire dept. to use a key if your not home rather than bashing down your front door. All the boxes have the same keyed lock. The fire dept. has that key. Inside that box you put a key to your front door.
