I know that gettting the actual position is case by case, and depends on the grades of those that you're up against, but what kind of average normally at least puts you in the running?

Well, the valedictorian of my brother's graduating high school class had a GPA of 4.2. It was that high because any AP course that is taken and passed will add 0.5 to your GPA. So, basically just 4.0...or higher if your school has AP classes.

I'd say above 3.8 maybe even 4.0 unweighted. My school is weighted so honors classes are .5 more points, AP classes 1 more point. So around a 4.2 or so is usually valedictorian.

The valedictorian is the student with the highest GPA. So, as long as there aren't two students with the same high GPA, than I suppose merit is considered.

At my high school the top 10% all have 4.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

A "B" average with selected courses in math, English, science and physics.

This is how it was when I graduated years ago.

As close to 100% (or 4.0+) as you can get
