I used to think that it was important to be the boss of all things when raising my son but now the edges have softened and you can get the same results w/o spanking. It is a thought.

We spanked our first child when she was very disobedient (one hand on buttocks, fairly lightly, over clothing). It worked fairly well with her. It was a last resort and we talked with her before and after. Our son does not respond the same way to spanking (he just gets mad), so he does time outs. We talk him through them (they are 3 minutes in length because he is 3). The problem with spanking is that a lot of the time the child doesn't understand , really, why their parents are physically reprimanding them. Another problem is that the parents sometimes consider beating a spanking. Which, is not the case.
Any form of discipline is hard for me to dole out because I am soft hearted.

Everyone needs boundaries, and kids are no exception. There has to be consequences otherwise they will never learn the difference between right and wrong. I'm not saying they need to be beaten or anything but they do need to have rules and punishments in place if the rules are broken.

spare the rod, spoil you...what do you think? maybe we should give rods to employers, for when you are late or don't meet a quota. is that good for you?

There are other ways of disciplining a child, but a good slap on the behind never hurt anyone.

Do we also stone our kids for masturbating or make a woman relative that's on her period live outside of the house for seven days?
If u don't continue in ALL things of the law then u are guilty of the WHOLE law. U can't pick and choose that which is convenient.

I believe that refers to correcting a child not necessarily hitting a child

beat the DEVIL out of them...that's what it means.
I lived.
I have never seen soooo many brats in my life....because parents aren't allowed to be a parent.
I don't believe in cruelty...I believe in consistent discipline. done in LOVE...NOT when you are so mad you could KILL them...
I believe that means when NOTHING else works.
a rebellious child is in serous trouble.

I agree. Kids definitely need to be disciplined. My parents whipped my behind when I needed it, and I'm a better man for it. Kids these days are too big for their britches. I don't have kids now, but I will discipline them when I do.

I do not agree at all. My kids are turning out to be great people and I have never once spanked them. Intelligent words and non-violent punishment are enough.
