There are five major religions in the world:
1. Christianity
2. Judaism
3. Islam
4. Hinduism
5. Buddhism

There are many sects of those religions (ie - Catholicism is a sect of Christianity) and then there are also smaller religions that are practiced by many, but not a major religion (like Shinto.)
I think it's impossible to count.

Thousands, but it depends very much on how you count them. There are two divisions of the Lutheran church; does this count as one religion, or two?
