The writers of this movie obviously wanted the audience to ponder just this question. The first time I saw this movie there was no doubt in my mind that Jim had lived. In fact, I had told a bunch of friends how good this movie was and how great the ending was in how it made you think. It wasn't until I saw it a second time and my sister said "he obviously died!" that I had considered an alternate ending. I think that the outcome is based on personal opinion, and the forever optomists such as myself will think that Linda saves her husband from a most certain death. Either that, or the ending is as obvious as it seems and did not serve the movie justice at all.

I think the movie is made for the viewer to say if Jim lived or died... I think he lived and they were moving at the end because they needed a bigger house with the 3rd child coming. Remember in the beginning they made a point in saying, "they bought a 3 bedroom home". Since Jim made sure his wife and kids were going to be financial ok - why else would they mover other than needing a bigger house... some think he died but who knows... good movie to me, I liked all the twists and turns.

I saw this film last night at the cinema. I live in England and the ending was undoubtable (perhaps we have seen different endings?).
SPOILER > ENDING BELOW:
The truck did not only crash into him and smush his car, but then the whole thing exploded. I havnt seen any of you describing the explosion in any of your answers, so I presume that whatever version you saw, there was just a crash, so perhaps the scene was cut short in that version. In either case, the ending with the explosion undoubtedly implies that he did not survive the accident.
The whole film lead up to his death and in the end she couldnt stop it happening, infact, it may not have even happened if she had not been there to try and stop it in the first place. To me this seems as if there was an underlying concept throughout the whole film that he is going to die, and not only that, but he is supposed to die.

(spoiler warning: in fact, get out of this whole question)
The fact that in the last scene we see Sandra Bullock and the children, but not Jim, as they are moving out of the house...suggests to me that he is dead. I believe if that if the message of the film were that destiny had been altered, they would have made a point of showing us.

personally i think jim does not die. i think the moral of the movie is: love your husband so he wont cheat on you. well when the priest says "everyday is a miracle" i understood that god was giving her another chance to love her husband so he wont cheat on her. sooooooo... when she woke up (the scene when she was pregnant) it was like nothing ever happen and it was just a wake up call so she could start loving her husband and not lose him. so i think all the bad stuff that was happening was all a PREMONITION that never happened.

I'm gonna disagree with the other answers and say he lived. Earlier in the movie she says "I don't believe in miracles" and the priest replies, "Every day we're alive can be a miracle."
Right before it is revelaed that she is pregnant, you can her the priests voice in the background, "Every day we're alive can be a miracle." I think this symbolized that he somehow survives.
Although I'm not sure there is a right or wrong answer. I think the directors wanted people to form their own oppinions and dissagree with what actually happens.

I think he died and the whole movie was about her overcoming guilt and discovering what she could do to make the best future full of hope and new life for her children
