What kind of programs? Is it a messenger service? If it says 'messenger service" at the top, follow these instructions:Windows xp. Start, control panel, performance and maintence. Click "services" icon. A long list comes up. Scrool to "services" right click services, select properties. Click stop, and Under the next scrool bar, select disable. Sometimes programs are set to run at selected times. Scheduled tasks. Start, all programs, accesories, system tools, scheduled tasks. Open and see if anything is in there. You might have a virus, that reinstall windows.

go to control panel then (add/remove) programs and get rid of all the stuff that you don't want. or
got to start -> run and type "msconfig" in the box click the startup tab and un check the items that you don't want to start when you turn on your PC.
you will get a warning that you altered the start up options so check the box that says don't show me this messg anymore. PS be carefull with msconfig.
