I like Lois Lowry (The Giver, Gathering Blue and messenger) and Scott Westerfeld (Uglies, Pretties and Specials) - both are trilogies set in possible futures. With Lowry, there really doesn't seem to be a lot of organization or much purpose, and no one questions the way things are because that's just how it is. Westerfeld is similar except this society is high tech with travel on hoverboards and operations when you turn 16, when you become a Pretty.

Lurlene McDaniel is good - I'd have a box of kleenex handy.

I also like Gary Paulsen, Louis Sachar, Sharon Draper and Walter Dean Myers.
