Modern health care is what I call "Health Scare." Did you know that in 13 years of school, doctors don't have to take a single nutrition course? They go off the latest "studies" for all the medications they perscribe and all their information. Doctors have really only been delivering babies for what, the last 100 years or so? I'm sorry - but babies were born just fine before then and women knew how to take care of their bodies. Personally I think doctor's interventions do more harm than good.... especially in labor. That is why I am listening to my own body, with the advice of a liscenced midwife, and staying OUT of the doctor's office. Sorry - too many of my friends have had horrible experiences with labor and birth, lost babies, had preterm babies... not good. And they all went to the doctors. Pregnant women ARE too afraid of eating or exersicing or what they drink or what they do - the stress of all this worrying has got to be worse than anything they could do otherwise. Everything in moderation, ladies!

on a certain level i agree with u.

u got to remember that the foods we eat today are not the same as when u had your kids. they add alot of pesticides and other chemicals to our food and into the oceans. so the fish aren't always as healthy as back in the day.

so when i was pregnant about 5 years ago, the only thing i didn't do was drink alcohol and smoke marijuana.

There's a good essay on the topic here:

http://www.slate.com/id/2106463/

I think that awful "What to Expect When You're Expecting" can take a lot of the blame. Mr Kmennie refers to it as 'the 'Mein Kampf' of pregnancy books; it's a whole pile of don't-do-this with very little offered to back it up, and it doesn't for a moment allow that pregnant women might be able to judge the risks for themselves, given enough information, and make their own decisions about what constitutes a healthy pregnancy. My midwife (and her student midwife shadow) both rolled their eyes at the mention of the book, noting that women who'd read it came in terrified about what they could and couldn't eat.

because although lots of women in the past ate all those things and did all those things and were fine there were others who were affected badly.
but you girls cant say nothin cause when my doctor told me i couldnt eat unpasturised mayo my mum went on about how she had 4 kids all safe and sound and didnt have to avoid those things- TWO weeks later i was in burger king about to open a sachet of mayo and she went mad!! "your not allowed that give me that mayonaise right now!" the same woman who ranted bout how the docs were all full of it.
then again, maybe my mums just a bit loopy anyway lol

No, i'm no longer afraid that i visit without note push them over a ledge. *???* No. It amazes me how not straightforward a woman's abdomen is at the same time as she is pregnant! that's exciting t contact the tummy, and experience the newborn kicking. understanding there's a touch infant in there, kicking.

Because the more we know the more we can prevent. Just because the risks from a food are small doesn't mean they don't exist. Pregnant women need to know the risks so they can weigh them for themselves.

Afterall if you couldn't care less if you ever have lunch meat, then you may as well avoid that possible risk, no?

People have been having children since... well the begining. That doesn't mean we should do it the way they did at the beginning! Research goes into these things. Why risk it? Will you have a misscarriage because you ate tuna? Will your child have birth defects because you drank caffiene? Probably not, but again, why risk it? 9 months is such a short time to give up the things that may harm your child, why do you NEED to eat/drink them? You probably advocate smoking and/or drinking during pregnancy too. Please tell me I am wrong.

I pretty much just make sure I don't smoke, eat healthy and exercise. Other than that, nothing specail.... well I rest alot and don't lift alot. But I go in hot tubs for a few mintures and eat some junk food and such. Pregnancy is a condition, not a disease

We are all in thrall to the health fascists. I'm amazed anybody ever managed to have a child before 1990.
