Is a hacker a dangerous person? I would not call them dangerous. Menacing perhaps. I can see why people think they're dangerous but if I had a choice between having my computer hacked or getting killed, I'd choose the hacker, not the killer.
Are they causing harm? Yes, but as long as it doesn't affect me personally (of course it could) I don't care what they do. People say that the "cost" of hackers passes on to the consumer. EVERYTHING is passed on to the consumer. One more thing won't make a huge difference.
The fact that they hack into corporations or government systems doesn't bother me one bit.
Have I had my personal computer hacked into - yes. Fortunately I caught it early and other than a little inconvenience, it didn't affect me much. Since then I've learned to protect myself with firewalls, etc. Could they still hack into my computer even with my "protection" - yes. Am I worried they will - no.
Hackers generally target corporations not your personal computer (notice I'm saying generally) so I'm not worried.
In addition, if they do get into my computer and they steal my credit card info - file a claim with the credit card co and you'll get it back. Is it bad if they steal your ssn and steal your identity - yes. Am I personally worried - no. I don't use credit of any kind. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it.
With all these companies keeping personal information on laptop computers that mysteriously dissapear, why would a hacker target me personally? With the morons working for this government and big corporations and being able to apparently get information so easily from them, why would a hacker target personal computers?! It would be a waste of time with bigger fish to fry out there.
As the previous person said, they create job security.

I guess it all depends on what they do with the skills.
I don't put blankets on every hacker.
However, if a hacker breaks into say your bank and takes your money out, then he is causing harm. Even if he just looks around and gets some information he has cost you as well as the bank.
The real fact is that hacking costs everyone of us real money. Even if it is not our machine and even if someone hacks just for the heck of it, businesses, consumers, governments have to hire people to fix and correct the security holes. Those people cost money, whose money do you think they get?
They get your money, my money, everyone has to pay for these "criminal" acts. Just as everyone has to pay for law enforcement because some people just can't or won't live and play well with others.
Do you think for one minute that when a government has to pay to secure a computer and repair the damage that was done to it that you and I don't face higher taxes? Do you think that businesses don't have to pass on the expenses of being in business by charging higher prices? Do you think that you personnally don't have to protect your own machine because somebody thinks it is fun to use your property for their enjoyment?
If someone takes your car, its called theft and when caught they go to jail. Why? Aren't they just having fun and they really aren't dangerous now are they. Theft of computer information is theft period. Ask any hacker who has been caught (many are)?
Is what they do harmful, yes because it affects all of us in a negative way and causes all of us to take efforts to defend ourselves. Anyone who thinks as long "as they dont get into my computer", who cares, is not thinking at all.
