It depends on whether you view love as intrinsically self-fulfilling or whether you think it should consist of reciprocation,in other words, personal rewards. It's obviously infinitely better if your love for another is reciprocated, but if it isn't,that would not alter the reality of your love for that person. People for whom love only feels real if it's reciprocated are generally rather infantile; they are concerned for their own needs. I can love anyone - without their even knowing it - and still feel that the sense of love is entirely real. If love couldn't exist without reciprocation, there would be little love in the world. Anyway, most of the time,we love things, not people - favorite movies, books, collectibles, etc. - and they obviously do not reciprocate. Love - if it's real - is it's own reward and requires no reciprocation. Still,it's an awful drag when you do love a person and they don't feel anything at all for you.. But it's a part of life. I've been living with it since junior high if not before.

Yes, it is totally possible to love somebody without them loving you back.
It is a really sad situation when you fall in love with someone, only to find out that they never really had any feelings at all for you.
As far as did your love for the person that did not love you back actually ever happen..... Well that answer has to come from your own heart. I would suspect that you really did feel love for this person, but when they said they did not love you, you felt a little resentment towards them. This feeling of resentment, or even anger could have caused you to re-think if you ever loved this person in the first place.
(holy crap! I think I just injured my brain explaining this answer! I hope it made at least a little sense to you!)
Take care!

Of course. All that stuff about love always being reciprocated and always magically working out is just a lot of baloney. Even if they do love you, there's no guarantee it'll work. 'Happily ever after' is for fairy-tales...

Just because someone doesn't love you doesn't mean you cant love them. You can truly love anyone but they do not have to reciprocate the feeling...

Sure you really could have loved them. Unfortunately, one-sided love occurs all the time.
