You say you want a climber to give security: I take it that you mean something thorny and unpleasant for trespassers!

Here are some prickly suggestions:
Pyracantha (firethorn). Very prickly, will grow to tree size (though smaller if kept in a pot). White flowers in spring, orange berries in autumn. Not highly toxic -- a child would have to eat a large bowlful to suffer any ill effects, and I've never seen any dog take an interest in the berries.

Sloe (blackthorn). The wild parent of the plum tree family. Wicked long thorns. Tree, but see above. Berries edible but incredibly sour.

Berberis. Probably the prickliest of the lot. A shrub rather than a tree. Orange flowers in early spring.

All these will take heavy pruning, helpful if you want to keep them to a manageable size.

They are also all self-supporting. If you want a climber that has to be tied in to the wall, how about one of the many big climbing roses. To take just one example, Albertine (pale pink flowers) will grow to 6 metres (smaller in a pot of course) and has very unfriendly thorns!

Or you could plant a bramble (blackberry). Grows like lightning from spring to late autumn, happy in a pot, vicious thorns and yummy fruit.

Climbing plants

Fast growers for quick cover - Clematis Montana is the fastest growing of all the clematis and also one of the easiest to grow. In perfect conditions it can grow to a height of 12m (40ft). If it is cut back by about one third after the first flowering this will encourage vigorous growth. Montana prefers alkaline soil and the roots and main stem need protecting from direct sunlight.

Virginia creeper is a hardy climber with warm red foliage in Autumn. Ideally should be given a horizontal support.

Honeysuckle comes is several varieties which are vigorous and hardy, with strongly scented flowers ranging in colour from pale creamy white to bright orange red. They prefer a lightly shaded spot, well drained soil and plenty of compost.

Russian Vine is probably the fastest wall cover of all, but can easily get out of hand as it can grow 5m (16ft) in one season.

Akebia quinata is a creeper with fragrant, deep purple flowers which will happily creep up any support on a warm, sheltered wall. It quickly reaches a height of 4.5m (15ft) with a spread of 1.8m (6ft) and could eventually grow as big as 6-9m (20-30ft).

Employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
use the ROSA RUGOSIA to eliminate Human pests.
I have done the same thing to keep out the little Morons whose parents don't care about them.
The Rosa Rugosia is the typical New England Beach Rose.

Don't know where you live but a Carolina Jessamine is my favorite vine, it has yellow flowers {now in the south}. Or a Clematis armandii, this is evergreen and has white flowers.
