Of course music has an effect, but whether it's good or bad depends on the type of music. Certain musics will help you study, thus improving your grades. Others will distract you so that you don't remember what you're studying, or have a hard time finishing. Some songs will soothe you, others will make you feel crazy.

There have been multiple studies showing relationships between music, behavior, memory and learning.

How long have they been telling parents to expose their babies to Beethoven and other classical music to develop their brains for future help with mathematics and logic?

How many people speed up when driving their car down the road because they're tuned into a hip hop station that's just turned on a high tempo song?

Therapists have used soothing music to help patients relax, sleep or open up about uncomfortable topics for years.

Advertisers use music to great affect to make you think something is good or bad.

Hollywood has used soundtracks to illicit emotional responses from their viewers in concert with the actors on the screen.

And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. I've listed some websites that relate studies on the relationship between music and human emotions.

Well,that's a good question.
If you live in your parents house, just remember they will never like the same kind of music as you.
It is such a personal thing.
I take it your grades are poor, and they're looking for a reason.
Maybe try counselling.
What is Truly at the heart of the problem?

For grades it can but only because when you are listen to music as you study you might not really be studying the best way (with the focus that it needs). of course poor studying will lead to poor grades.

as for music causing bad behavior I think that's bunk. There are much bigger factors that lead to the way people act then things like music. Things like the way someone was raised, the environment that they live in, play much bigger roles in this short of thing.

usually soft relaxing music makes me relax and i concentrate better on my homework. I have also listened to really loud rock music at time and i still have pretty good grades. It all depends on the person. Some people like dead silence and some can't stand not having sound while doing something. =] <3

The main problem with listening to music is if it's too loud, or you're wearing headphones with the volume too loud, you'll damage your hearing without realizing it.

I don't believe there's any proof that music CAUSES bad behavior. People who are unhappy and not doing well in school probably listen to angry music. People who are unhappy and angry will act out with bad behavior and listen to music which reflects their anger and unhappiness.. I think that people seek out music which reflects how they feel. If you're angry, you look for music that expresses your anger. If you're feeling misunderstood, you are attracted to songs where the theme is feeling misunderstood.

We all like music that we can identify with. I'm willing to bet that kids who live out in the country and own a horse are more likely to listen to country because they identify with it. Urban kids probably don't relate as much to songs about horses :-)

Yes. Just like music can evoke happy feelings in us, it can also cause us to have negative thoughts. If the music has negative messages and is filled with violence, rage, and disrespect, it can influence you, especially if you are young and/or vulnerable. Have you ever heard the saying, "garbage in, garbage out"? Well, it applies here, too.

Music is very influential and affects you in many ways. Like if I hear Celine Dion I want to drive railroad spikes into my ears, or Britney Shears I want to hang myself with barb wire from an apple tree. If Macarena or YMCA comes on I want to move my booty, and find some heavy duty earplugs and a rubber mallet to smash the speakers.

It depends, does the music consume you? Do you want to do it all the time? What kind of music are you listening to?

I can't study without music, so i would have to say no. But it might depend on the person.
