Why does David Stern keep the WNBA around when it loses money year after year, is boring, with attendance continually falling? He can easily do something constructive with the money he saves by shutting it down, like lowering NBA ticket prices or selling League Pass for half the price.

The WNBA is still around because it would be politically incorrect to shut it down. Even though it is losing money hand over fist, David Stern would be considered a male chauvinist, maybe even a misogynist, if he shut down the WNBA.

Probably because he doesn't want to get sued by all the women's groups who will shriek and complain if he goes with the smart business decision. Really, it's up to Stern and the owners of NBA teams (since Stern talked some of them into forming a WNBA team) if the WNBA lives or dies.

If this were any other organization, they would have folded years ago. But since the WNBA is backed by NBA money, and the NBA is huge right now, Stern and the owners can afford to take the hit as long as the NBA keeps turning a profit. If they fall on hard times, however, it is a sure thing that the WNBA will die and the frivolous lawsuits will begin.

The WNBA lost only $16 million last year. That is not a huge loss. The Portland Trailblazers lost $20 million last year.

If anyone is afraid of losing money, why don't they shut down the Portland Trailblazers, Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Charlotte Bobcats or all the other losing teams in the NBA ?

Because they are Men's teams, and local governments like Seattle are willing to spend $50 million for a new Arena to keep the franchise alive.

You are crazy if you think the NBA will ever lower ticket prices. They make only a little money on seats. Most of the money comes from Luxury box seats, TV deals, and NBA merchandise. They don't give a sh** about ticket prices, because there will always be a richer person who can afford it.

They pay the NBA players on average $1.5 million a season. A WNBA player only makes $40,000 per season. NBA teams have private jets to fly between games. WNBA women fly on regular commercial jets like you and me.

The WNBA provides a positive role model for girls. Would you rather have your daughter watch basketball, or Paris Hilton taking her clothes off in front of horny guys ?
A juiced up baseball player on steroids, anyone ?

The WNBA is a constructive thing. It does not use alot of money to operate. It is only a drop in the bucket of David Stern's enormous multi $ Billion budget.

And it's a good bargain at $10 for a good lower level seat. Just come to a game, and then you can have a right to complain.

Good question. Maybe they are hoping for a mircale. No pun attended. Mircale use to be the name of the WNBA franchise in Orlando that went under. I think they are hoping one day that women might support the sport. The older demographic of women have proven to hold little interest.
I think they pegged the young generation of girls as their salvation. Good luck shifting their disposable income away from the shopping malls. I give it a few more years before the millions lost add up, and common sense finally kicks in.

I don't know but it sure sucks. The ONLY thing I can think of is that he is hoping to attract female fans to the real NBA by getting them interested in the WNBA first.

it is still around because if david stern shut it down people would say he was sexist or something like that. i, play basketball and i dont think it would be fair to women that are good at basketball not to have a pro league.

It is still around because the players love the game and it gives younger girls somebody to look up to. ( young basketball players)

Also it would be wrong to take the WNBA out becasue women deserve to play to and are just as good as men.

The truth is it gives lesbians a place to go. Much better than watching them in public parks.
