Hi Penelope!
My favorite animal and one which most people know from a cartoon - although it's a little bit away from the truth - is the Tasmanian Devil. The cartoon version is called "Taz"...The Devil is a truly remarkable animal, being a very fierce - looking creature which feeds on dead and decaying animals in the Forests of Tasmania. It is a Nocturnal (active mostly at night) marsupial (rears it's young in a pouch) and has an incredible noise - I think it's rather appropriately named!! The other thing about the Tassie Devil is that it is in a serious amount of trouble. They are contracting a disease from somewhere which results in some truly gross facial tumours and leads very quickly to their deaths. Somewhere in the region of 50 to 80% of all Devils on the island of Tasmania have disappeared in the last ten years and there's a big fear that we're going to see them go extinct in the next ten to fifteen years....
The person that said "no-one knows if a platypus is a bird or a mammal"....that made me laugh out loud! What a truly ridiculous statement!!!! They are an aquatic mammal you dolt! You could have done a LITTLE bit of research beforehand!
The mythology of the platypus has an interesting history, however. It was first "discovered" by Europeans in the early 1800's but was considered by the "scientists" of the Royal Society in London to be a fake! At the time there had been a number of attempts to "make" new animals, and the platypus with all it's unique features was assumed to be someone's idea of a joke. It wasn't recognised as being real for about 50 years! The main problem was that it was impossible to transport a live platypus back to England for the scientists to study. In fact, the same situation exists today, with the first live young being born in captivity just a few years ago as they are one of the few animals which truly HATE being caged and will not breed for uor human pleasure.
There was a suggestion above that you could do the Tasmanian Tiger as well....one thing you have to understand about this creature - fascinating though it is - is it has been declared "extinct". There are currently 2 prizes of $1 million for anyone who can bring back some serious evidence (photos, poo, skeleton, footprints - anything) that proves that it is still with us. Also worth checking out...
Here's a YouTube video of the Tassie devil...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwhJ9ZMHAFo
The last thing i can tell you is that they'll eat ALL the animal that they start on...leaving nothing but a patch of blood by the end. Their jaws are said to be 50 times stronger than a dog!!!
Hope this helps!!
Love and Light,
Jarrah

Maybe Geese dont have any unique qualities but their lotlaties and love of their off spring is just amazing, they are trully beautiful and caring animals
Geese are very loyal to their families and very protective of their partners and offspring. Often, they will refuse to leave an injured or sick mate or chicks behind, even if winter is approaching and the other geese in the group are flying south. After a partner dies, some geese spend the rest of their lives without a mate; this can be a long time, because geese can live up to 25 years

Everyone knows about the platypus. Do the other monotreme, the Echidna. It is less well known, so that if you make a small mistake, no one will know. There is plenty of info on the web. San Diego zoo, below, has an info page for it. It is simple, so should not be difficult to translate.

Go for the duck billed platypus - a mammal that lays eggs, and has poisonous spurs on it's legs. There will be loads on the web.

Do a platypus. No one knows if it's a bird or a mammal. It lays eggs, and has a bill. Males are poisonous and can kill a dog, and cause a human pain. They have a tail like a beaver, webbed feet, and they produce milk.

Cows have four stomachs... dolphins use radar... whales use sounds like songs to communicate... snakes have heat vision.... there's plenty of things to write about. Just find an animal you like and I'm sure that there's something original about them that you could write about.

How about the kangaroo? It's the only animal that keeps their young in a pouch.
